FEDERAL TIGER AND FIGURAL MAPLE SLANT LID SECRETARY BOOKCASE.Second quarter 19th century New England. In two parts, the upper case with molded cornice above a pair of paneled doors opening to an interior fitted with three original adjustable shelves. Fitted to the lower case with hinged, sloping lid, the interior with four document drawers above a row of valenced pigeonholes over four additional drawers centering a mahogany prospect drawer with contrasting string inlaid borders. The interior fitted with small drawers and storage space, the lid resting on lopers. The case fitted with four graduated long drawers, each with string inlaid border. The whole raised on slender flared French feet. Note: found in a Castine, Maine home. SIZE: 7' 4-1/2" h x 42-1/2" w x 21-1/2" d. CONDITION: Desk retains original surface with untouched, darkened patina. Backboards and feet original. Current wood turned knobs are replacements. Two inset escutcheons absent. Restoration to receiver of lid lock. Old losses to mid molding on case sides. Considerable in-use wear and abrasions, notably at case edges, bottoms of feet, and at juncture of crown molding and upper case. 52829-5 HMG (2,500-4,500)
