ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) THE LARGEST JACOBSEN PAINTING IN THE WORLD: THE CLYDE LINE'S "S.S. APACHE".Monumental oil on canvas ship portrait of the "Apache". To our knowledge, the largest painting that Jacobsen ever produced. This painting appears in the Jacobsen Checklist and its dimensions are by far larger than any recorded there. The S.S. Apache with completed in August 1891 by the Reeder & Sons, of Baltimore, MD and weighed 416 tons being 190' in length. Made of an iron hull and housed three guns. The Apache was the first to establish a direct passenger service between New York and Miami. The Apache was also featured on many postcards and tourist ephemera in the southern U.S. This monumental canvas shows the black hulled three-deck steamer traveling right to left with low points of land off bow and stern which is believed to be Florida. A three-mast sailing ship is moored off its port bow and several sails are seen on horizon. Three men in a dory row away from boat. Name is emblazoned on the front bow as well as on top of the pilot house. The Apache ship flag off front mast, the Company flag off back mast. The U.S. flag flies off the stern, all on a choppy white tip greenish/blue water. Signed lower right and dated "1917". Housed in a magnificent 7" reeded gilt frame with gold liner. This painting by Antonio Jacobsen was originally de-accessed by the Seamen's Church Institute on New York City. In 1999 the painting was conserved by Yost Studio in New York City. The restoration included the removal of the old wax lining and relining with beva. The old over paint was stripped off and the painting was cleaned and properly restored. Most of the current inpainting applied by the Yost team was to conceal staining or discoloration which occurred during the process of aging. It appears that the owners of the Apache took extremely great pride in the ship since their commission to Jacobsen for its portrait is apparently the largest Jacobsen ever produced. A very dramatic and handsome Marine ship portrait by one of the most renowned ship portrait artists. SIZE: 47-3/4" x 95-1/2". CONDITION: Some restoration with inpainting, craquelure. Very good. 53076-31 WAG (25,000-35,000)
