LOUIS XVI CARVED WALNUT DOUBLE DOOR BOOKCASE.Late 18th century Brittany, France. The foliate carved molded cornice projecting above the rectangular case with picture frame foliate carved molding centering a pair of cabinet doors with a pair of glass panels within shaped and scalloped molded surrounds carved with ribbon tied floral sprays above and below. The lower portion of the doors with raised panels above a molded apron. The bookcase fitted with four adjustable walnut shelves. The cabinets sides each with two raised panels. The whole in a fumed oak original finish. Note: bookcase with removable cornice, doors, and shelves. SIZE: 71" h x 50" w x 20" d. PROVENANCE: Contents of a lifetime collection "Brook Crossing," South Pomfret, VT. CONDITION: Bookcase retains original surface with dark patina and coffee color. Carvings intact. Backboards and panels original. Frame of cornice has been rebuilt. All four legs have been spliced and replaced as a result of old insect damage, now inactive.
