TWO CARVED AND PAINTED MANGLEBOARDS WITH HORSE SHAPED HANDLES, ACCOMPANIED BY TWO ROLLERS.Early 19th century, Scandinavia, probably Denmark. The first, a beech example in red and blue paint intricately carved with star and pinwheel rondels of Gothic design, alternating with carved, fluted molded semi-circles, carved scrolling and floral vinery all within a molded border. The standing horse handle, carved from the solid, in front of which are two rectangular panels; the uppermost with painted initials "PKT" and "SDM", identifying the betrothed couple. The second panel with the carved date, "1813". This mangleboard is accompanied by a turned beech roller pin. The second, painted in forest green and red, carved in shallow relief with pinwheel and star rondels, alternating with carved fans. A small rectangular panel carved with the initials "MHD". The full bodied standing horse handle, carved from the solid, and with a pinwheel rondel carved on the right shoulder. The under-surface of the oak mangleboard, additionally carved with small monograms, believed to be "DDS" and "DC". This example is accompanied by a turned oak roller pin. SIZE: 27" l x 5-1/4" w. 28-3/4" l x 4-5/8" w. Rollers: 24" l. CONDITION: All are structurally intact, surfaces untouched. With good rich patina, very good overall. 52935-7 HMG (2,000-2,500)
