DIMINUTIVE PAINT DECORATED PINE CHEST.First half 19th century Central Europe, probably Austrian. The rectangular hinged lid with applied molded edge, mounted on wrought iron strap hinges opening to a storage well. The dovetailed case with sloping sides, the ends fitted with iron carrying handles. The front panel nicely decorated with a pair of opposing stylized rams within a painted rondel amidst flower heads centering a scrolling cartouche. Case ends decorated with a floral rondel above a stylized pendant belle flower. The chest with a blue-green background, sponge decorated, within mustard ochre borders. Chest is raised on a later simple box frame. SIZE: 15" h x 32" w x 15" d. PROVENANCE: Contents of a lifetime collection "Brook Crossing," South Pomfret, VT. CONDITION: Painted surfaces original beneath layers of polish. The hardware and lock original. Normal expected in-use wear. Good overall condition. 52806-136 HMG (800-1,200)
