FEDERAL BENJAMIN SWAN INLAID BIRCH TALL CASE CLOCK.First quarter 19th century, Augusta, Maine. The molded arched bonnet surmounted by fretwork alternating with three pilasters with ball and spire brass finials above an arched glazed paneled door flanked by free standing ring-turned colonettes with brass capitols and bases. The painted dial with a rocking ship in the arch above a Roman numeral chapter ring within an Arabic numeral ring above a subsidiary sweep seconds dial. The dial fitted with time and strike apertures centering a calendar dial. The dial additionally marked "Benj Swan / Augusta" all within spandrels of periwinkles within leafy sprays. The eight-day weight driven brass movement striking on a bell. The waisted case fitted with crossbanded and thumb molded door centering a birdseye inlaid panel and flanked by engaged quarter columns. The box base with recessed central panel, raised on bracket feet centering a shaped apron. Clock is offered with original pendulum with brass clad bob, iron and brass winder and a pair of cylinder weights. SIZE: 92" h x 14" w x 9-1/4" d. Overall: 18" w. CONDITION: Original fretwork intact. Case has been cleaned of original surface with minor shrinkage cracks, throat door filled shrinkage cracks in panel of face, glass panels in bonnet original. Clock dial with original paint surfaces with paint losses to ship. Posts of brass movement have resulted in corresponding paint loss to dial. Hands appear original. Painted dial with light craquelure throughout, otherwise good. Movement recently professionally cleaned and refurbished. 52732-1 HMG (3,000-5,000)
