FEDERAL MAHOGANY TALL CASE CLOCK WITH SIGNED DIAL.

First quarter 19th century, probably Maine. The Roxbury style case with pierced fretwork alternating with three brass ball-and-spire finials above the arched, molded cornice over the glass panel door, flanked by free-standing reeded colonnettes with Doric brass capitals and bases. The case with concave molded throat above a door with inset birch panel flanked by engaged, reeded quarter columns with brass capitals and bases above the molded box base with mahogany panel within bird's eye maple crossbanding. The case raised on French feet with scalloped returns. The wooden face paint decorated with floral sprays in the arch and with floral spandrels. The Roman numeral chapter ring and Arabic minutes ring centering time and strike apertures beneath the subsidiary seconds dial. The face signed "S. Edwards / Gorham" in script within an oval. The clock offered with two weights, pendulum, winder, and door key. SIZE: 8' 2" h x 18" w, 13-1/2" throat width x 9-1/2" d. PROVENANCE: By descent through the family of Major John Mead Gould. CONDITION: Case with old, if not original, surface, now cleaned and polished. Minor repairs to fretwork with all original elements. Brass finials are of the period. Bonnet door glass possibly replaced. Old repair to proper right case molding beneath the bonnet. Wood dial original with original paint. Feet and backboards original. Movement appears intact and functional with one disconnected wire cable in need of replacement. Original wood wheels for weights present and intact.
