AMERICAN SCHOOL (mid-19th century) BUST LENGTH PORTRAIT OF ABBY MELLISH SWEETSER.

Circa 1830, unsigned oil on panel portrait of Abby Sweetser (1781-1859) wearing a black gown with lace collar secured by a mourning brooch and alace bonnet. Abby was the wife of Benjamin C. Sweetser, a leather worker and trunk maker from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They had seven children. Housed in a heavy mahogany frame. SIZE: 29" x 23". Overall: 35" x 30". PROVENANCE: By descent through the family of Major John Mead Gould. CONDITION: Good, surface grime and abrasions, panel is slightly warped 52936-16 AKL (500-700)
