SHERATON MAHOGANY AND BIRD'S EYE MAPLE SECRETARY BOOKCASE.

Second quarter 19th century New England. The case in two parts. The bookcase with swan's neck pediment centering three turned finials above a pair of paneled doors opening to an arrangement of shelves and compartments in three tiers, stepped back and mounted on the lower case above an arrangement of two rows of small drawers behind a hinged, baize lined writing surface resting on lopers centering three graduated long drawers with rounded contrasting edges raised on swelled, tapering, cylindrical legs with ring-turned cuffs. The paneled doors and all drawer fronts with bird's eye maple figured panels. SIZE: 76" h (overall without finials) x 38" w x 20-1/2" d. CONDITION: Surfaces original and undisturbed with good patina. Old repair to swan's neck pediment. Old damage, including losses, to moldings beneath bookcase top and along lower case edges. Brasses are of the period but not original to the desk; original holes filled. Backboards and legs original. 52829-1 HMG (4,000-6,000)
