CARVED AND PAINTED WHIRLIGIG OF A CIVIL WAR SOLDIER.

Second half 19th century, American. With carved facial features and mustache, the figure wears a military hat with leather strap and a blue and white uniform. The rotating arms hold saber-like swords that serve as wind paddles. Head made separately and connects to body with pivoting peg, allowing for variable positions. For comparable examples, see lot 95 from the Weiss Collection-Skinner Auction Feb. 2007 as well as lot 400, Skinner auction Nov. 5, 2006. SIZE: 25″ h (paddle extended) x 6-1/2″ w. CONDITION: Very good overall. Minor age cracks and paint wear. Visor of cap absent. 52896-1 CF (2,500-3,500)
