TWO CARVED AND PAINTED SCULPTURES OF QUAIL.Mid- to late-20th century, New England. Each mounted on a piece of driftwood simulating natural ground. The first illegibly signed in pencil beneath the base. The second a life-size sculpture posed with left leg withdrawn. Unsigned, attributed to craftsman John Mackenzie of Brewster, Massachusetts. SIZE: First: 3-3/4" h x 6-1/2" w. Second: 7-1/2" h x 12" w. PROVENANCE: Contents of a lifetime collection "Brook Crossing," South Pomfret, VT. CONDITION: First: probably loss of paint with later touch-ups to beak. Otherwise very good. Second: tight hairline stress crack at base of neck.
