RARE YEW WOOD LAP DESK.First half 19th century, England. Rectangular hinged lid fitted with baize-lined writing surface continuing and joined to the base, both sides opening to storage wells. The base additionally fitted with two inkwell holders, a tilting pen tray and small sloping tray. A brass pin with turned finial fitted to the base of the proper right side, when withdrawn, allows the concealed drawer on the end of the desk to open. The desk, fitted with brass carrying bales at each end, and with a brass escutcheon on the front. The yew well figured throughout. SIZE: 6-/12" h x 22" w x 10-1/4" d. PROVENANCE: Contents of a lifetime collection "Brook Crossing," South Pomfret, VT. CONDITION: Early, but not original surface, cleaned, polished and with stabilized fissure cracks, now with rich, dark patina. One lower corner of desk with loss to wood strip at front and end of corner, otherwise generally good. 52806-118 HMG (400-600)
