This is one of the early Smith carbines made by the Massachusetts Arms Co. which features sling swivels on the barrel band and mounted in the bottom of the stock, in addition to the saddle ring bar on the left side of the frame. Many times these early models with sling swivels are referred to as the "Artillery Model", although that designation is erroneous with no known artillery regiments having been issued these guns. Matching four digit serial number. Among the many Union cavalry regiments to have been issued Smith carbines is the 3rd WV, 7th & 11th IL, 1st CT, 7th & 17th PA, 6th & 9th OH, and the 1st MA. CONDITION: The frame retains a pleasing patina with some surface rust, the balance of the steel parts have been reblued. Stocks have been refinished with dings and handling marks. Cartouche is barely visible on the left side of the stock. Forend is loose. Bore is good with strong rifling and pitting. The rear sling swivel loop has been replaced to a circular one. Good mechanical function.
