This is a very scarce Confederate numbered on the buttplate tang pattern 1858 Enfield Naval Short Rifle. Marked "TOWER/ 1861" on the lock. Standard "25" barrel proofs. Cutlass bayonet lug on the right side of the barrel. Brass mounted. Of note is the Confederate inventory number hand engraved on the buttplate tang, properly read with the muzzle of the gun pointed to the left. The number is "939". With the gun, is the proper style ramrod, which is also has a Confederate engraved inventory number on it. Unfortunately the number on the rod is not matching to the buttplate tang, however it is original. The number on the ramrod is "1426". The Confederate imported 1858 Naval Short Rifles are seldom encountered on the market. CONDITION: Very good, as unfortunately refinished. The stock has been sanded and re-varnished at some point and the brass has been shined, as has the ramrod. The lock has an honest patina to it. The barrel appears to have been touched up in places. Markings are clear. The rear sight ladder is most likely from a Springfield Trapdoor rifle. Bore is worn, although there are some traces of rifling. Sling swivel loops are most likely more modern made replacements. Lock is in good mechanical condition.
