Baton measuring 22" in overall length, chiefly made of rosewood construction with a 4" long ivory tip carved and a classical female profile and rococo elements. A 7-1/4" ivory section forming the grip and pommel carved with a flying eagle surrounded by leaves, rope borders and leaf carved pommel. The grip section is ribbed top and bottom with a braided white cord knuckle guard ending in a pair of tassels. On the main body is a 1-1/4" tall golden shield, with zig-zag borders, inscribed "PRESENTED TO/SERGEANT/Ernest K. Bingham/by the members of/ /the 76th Precinct./ NEW YORK POLICE/ July 9th 1901." Baton is housed in its original case which measures 29" long, 7" wide and 3-1/2" high of paper-covered wood construction. The top with a worn inscription with indecipherable name and "Lieutenant of Police / New York City". Blue silk lined interior contains a black leather belt with rectangular gilt brass belt buckle featuring the crest of the City of New York, black leather baton holder, nickle plated "Police" hat badge, nickel plated "Roundsman/61" hat badge and two 1-1/4" ivory buttons carved with the initials "EKB". Interior with printed silk makers label which reads "S.A. French/108 West 28 St N.Y". CONDITION: Baton in fine condition, exhibiting no wear and with excellent silk tassels. Exterior of the case shows wear to the paper covering. Interior of the case and accessories are in excellent condition showing no wear. From the Ray Bentley collection.
