Scarce U.S. holster for the M1873 Single Action Army revolver, with the design attributed to Captain James M. Ropes. Experimental right handed design holster for the Colt Single Action Army and Smith & Wesson Schofield revolvers. Constructed of black bridle-weight leather, the holster has an extended belt loop/back shirt, a full flap top with strap closure, ten cartridge loops sewn at the mouth, protected by the flap. Leather remains fairly supple with moderate flaking and loss of finish. The cartridge loops remain in place on the face of the holster body and are strong with no loss of finish. The upper flap is stamped "C89". The closure strap on the flap is solid and the plug is present but is worn through. The muzzle end rear seam is split from the plug and extending 3" up. Overall a solid example of a very scarce U.S. military holster from the latter part of the Indian Wars. CONDITION: Very good. From the Ray Bentley collection.

Item Dimensions: Largest: 12" x 7".
