Measuring 22-1/2" in overall length, the baton is chiefly of rosewood construction, with a 4" long ivory tip carved with a spread wing eagle within a wreath, a 3-1/4" oval ivory section in the grip carved with a shield within a wreath surrounded by leaves, and a 1-1/2" ivory ball pommel carved with leaves. The grip section is ribbed top and bottom, with a braided white cord knuckle guard ending in a pair of tassels. On the main body is a 1-1/4" tall golden shield, with zig-zag borders, inscribed "PRESENTED TO/SERGEANT/William J. McCarthy/by the members of the 1st section/of the 35th Precinct./ NEW YORK POLICE/July 8th 1901." CONDITION: In fine condition with wear to the tassels only. From the Ray Bentley collection.
