This gun features full nickel plated finish and carved steer head ivory grips on right side panel. Engraving covers approximately 2/3 of the surface in scroll. CONDITION: Retains approximately 90% of the reapplied nickel finish with the balance a nice, light patina. Grips are excellent to near mint. Indexes correctly with a fine, strong bore with residue in grooves. These beautiful period engraved Colts that do not factory letter fall under the blanket term of "New York Engraved", this was the practice of guns being engraved, often by the very engravers employed by Colt, but done off-premise. It has now become a catch-all phrase for contemporary to the time engraved Colts that do not letter but does not guarantee that this gun was actually engraved in New York, and could have been performed by any master engraver anywhere in the United States or abroad. They offer the collector an opportunity to buy a finely engraved antique Colt for a fraction of the price of an example performed at the factory. Handsome cowboy gun. This gun, serial number 192619 was part of a shipment of six guns sent from the factory on January 17th, 1900 as a blued, 4-3/4", .45 caliber with grips not listed. Shipped to one of the largest dealers west of the Mississippi, Simmons Hardware of St. Louis. They were a giant wholesaler who shipped guns to little gun shops all over the West. At some point, contemporary to the gun, it was engraved, nickel plated and ivory steer head grips attached.
