Early guns imported by Charles Daly are always of high quality, the top quality guns are almost always exceptional, especially those like this example by H. A. Lindner with 29 - 3/4" dovetailed Witten steel barrels gold inlaid "Charles Daly Diamond Quality" in unmatted rectangle in slightly raised matted game rib. Breech ends of barrels have bands and flourishes of exceptionally well cut relief scrolling acanthus with geometric highlights. Witten steel emblems are also present. Barrel flats are stamped with German black powder proofs. Bottoms of barrels with "WITTEN EXCELSIOR" and crossed pistol logos surmounted by "HAL". Lindner's serial number "2199" is on bottom of right barrel. Case hardened double arched back boxlock action with intercepting safety sears also features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), square crossbolt third fastener, gold plated pin cocking indicators, side clips, and double triggers with checkered finger blades. Water table is marked "PRUSSIA". Action is engraved with full coverage exceptionally well sculpted deep relief scrolling acanthus with floral highlights surrounding oval vignettes of dog and game birds in high relief gold within well detailed backgrounds; a pair of ducks are flying toward viewer on left side of action, while a trio of grouse are on right. Trigger plate portrays setter in open meadow, and a pair of woodcock fly through sylvan opening on trigger guard bow. Fences are also deeply relief carved in acanthus and beads. "Charles Daly" is engraved on action around bases of fences. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Wonderfully marbled and figured European walnut round knob pistol grip buttstock measures 13 - 5/8" over tan leather covered pad. Side panels are checkered and have elongated drop points. Point pattern checkering is at grip which has hard rubber inlay at tip of knob. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend with inset horn tip has Deeley release. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain over 90% good quality re-blue over some light marks and dings. Engraving remains sharp and clear. Action retains a considerable amount of original case hardening color, percentage difficult to ascertain due to extensive engraving, Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish with numerous marks, checkering re-cut. Area at rear of forend along barrel channels, relieved to disguise possible chips or cracks, a very long time ago. Bores are very fine to excellent, shiny with a hint of frosting. Action is very slightly loose and down on flats. Ejectors are in time. A beautiful gun with outstanding engraving. MGM37
