Comprising: A) An American stocked flintlock holster pistol, circa 1800, with round iron barrel, left side of breech marked with four English proofs. Rounded lockplate is unmarked. Plain walnut stock with one brass ramrod ferrule and brass trigger guard with arrow finial. Left side of stock, opposite lock, is carved with initials "J.S." and top of wrist, behind barrel tang carved "B W / 1805". Wooden ramrod is a replacement. CONDITION: Good, lock and barrel retain a brown patina. Lock is in original flintlock configuration. Brass furniture retains a very dark, unpolished patina. Stock has one small piece of wood replaced above the front of the lockplate and some scattered minor chips, cracks, and marks from use. B) Imported Ketland flintlock pistol with American proofs for militia use or the American market. Features a round iron barrel, top stamped "LONDON" and left side marked with American proofs in ovals "V" and "P". Brass furniture including a pierced sideplate, trigger guard with arrow finial, and an oval wrist escutcheon. Partially figured walnut stock and period wooden ramrod. For a nearly identical example, see the Coutty pistol in plate No. 34, pictured in "Historic Pistols" by Smith and Bitter. CONDITION: Good, overall. Barrel retains a brown patina, lock has been professionally reconverted. Brass furniture retains a mellow patina. Stock has some marks from use and minor age cracks. These are two very nice American pistols.
