Standard features include octagon barrel, six shot, single action, brass trigger guard and walnut grips. This started life as a Martially marked 1858 Remington .44 caliber revolver and was converted in the 1870's to fire a .44 caliber centerfire cartridge. The backstrap is engraved "F.D. BALDWIN", we must assume this was his revolver during the Civil War and do not know if he continued to use it after the conversion, as he was actively engaged during the Indian Wars as well as the Spanish American War. There is no finish left on this gun; cylinder is peppered and balance of gun is brown-grey patina. Numerous inspector marks on the majority of parts. There is a unit number "55" stamped on underside of barrel and inside of grip frame. Lanyard loop is intact. Indexes and locks up but timing is off. Surprisingly, the bore is in excellent condition with strong lands and clean grooves; no traces of damage. The most interesting part of this revolver is its former owner, Major General Frank Dwight Baldwin; one of only 19 men to receive the Medal of Honor twice. He acquired his first in the Atlanta Campaign and his second in 1874 during the Indian Wars. Included with this revolver is his complete military history, including his association with Buffalo Bill. A very storied military career for this double Medal of Honor winner.
