(1883) 28" Dovetailed barrels are fitted with full length unmatted rib holding one standing, two nested folding leaf express rear, and silver bead front, sights. Tops of barrels are engraved "J. Purdey & Sons" "Audley House, South Audley Street, London". Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs. Round bodied action with snap Jones underlever incorporating third sliding bolt engaging rear lump, is fitted with island back spring locks having round bodied rebounding serpentine hammers and front sliding stalking safeties. Action also features side clips, and double triggers with rear trigger firing right lock and front trigger firing left. Action is engraved with 80% coverage classic rose and scroll. "J. Purdey & Sons" is on left side of action. Nicely marbled and figured European walnut steel capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 5/8" over checkered steel buttplate. Stock features shadow line right hand cheekpiece, standard checkering at grip, and a sling eye as well as a silver oval on toe line, engraved with a mostly obliterated coat of arms. Splinter forend with shaped and engraved steel tip has roller spring tension release. Weight: 8 lbs 11 oz. Sir Thomas Hare was the illegitimate son of Sir Thomas Norman. Hare was a Lieutenant of the Scot's guards who fought in the Zulu and Boer wars. CONDITION: Fair to good. Rifle inexpertly refinished and partially reworked, with most of immersion blue on all metal parts over some pitting. Newer grip cap with reworked area on tip end of grip. Forend most likely later. Loop replaced on barrels. Bores are very fine to excellent. Action is tight. Right lock will cock but does not "click". Hammer loose. Triggers need to be switched back. With some work this rifle could probably be made into a good shooter. MGM 179
