(1911 as indicated by copy of original factory ledger page) 26" Chopper lump barrels are fitted with file cut quarter rib holding one standing, two folding leaf express rear sight with leaves marked for 100, 200, and 300 yards; matching front ramp holds gold bead. Tops of barrels are engraved "Holland & Holland 98. New Bond Street. London." and "Winners of All the "Field" Rifle Trials, London." Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 75 grains cordite, and 480 grain bullet. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with serial numbers, and splinter is heavily reinforced. A wide sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Case hardened action with back spring locks has top tang which extends over comb, and features non-automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), sliding third fastener, bushed strikers, gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, and double triggers (front with checkered finger blade). Locks are of hand detachable type, but lever headed screw not installed. Action and locks are engraved with small scroll borders. "Holland & Holland" is on each lockplate. Bottom of action is engraved "CHARGE" "75 Grains Cordite" "500/ .465" "Case 3-1/4 Inches". Blued trigger guard has serial number on tang which extends to steel grip cap with trap. Well made finely figured and marbled European walnut replacement buttstock measures 15" over Silver type pad with widows peak, and features H&H styling with correctly shaped left hand shadow line cheekpiece, point pattern checkering at grip of correct pattern, as well as a vacant silver oval and sling loop matching that on barrels on toe line. (Original stock with right hand cheekpiece, somewhat shorter length of pull, and what appears to be lower comb and heel dimensions, is included). Matching original splinter ejector forend has forward pivoting lever release. Rifle is housed in its original leather case with riveted on brass corners. Case is lined in green cloth and has large paper H&H label in lid. A 1929 dated charge card is also in lid (factory records indicate rifle was re-regulated in 1931). Accessories include two piece composition covered steel rifle cleaning rod, pair of .465 snap caps, H&H marked round oil bottle, some cleaning brushes, original front sight with gold bead and flip-up night bead, slip-on front sight protector, and a "Docter Optic" red dot optical rear sight (quarter rib has milled in, but almost undetectable dovetail for this sight). Drop at heel: approximately 2-7/8". Drop at comb: approximately 1-3/4". LOP: 15" Cast on approximately 1/2". Weight: 11 lbs 2 oz. CONDITION: Fine, as partially refurbished. Barrels retain nearly all of a London quality re-black with some subsequent wear on sides of breech and behind rear sight from hand wear while carrying over one shoulder. Action retains 20% original faded case color, balance a pleasing silver. New stock retains most of its original oil finish which is quite dry and could use another coat of oil. Original stock retains nearly all of an old oil refinish over a number of light marks, checkering re-cut. Original forend wood matches original buttstock well. Bores are excellent with strong rifling throughout, some very light frosting is at breech ends. Action is tight (closes with correct "thunk"). Barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Trap cover on grip cap has retaining spring either missing or broken. Case leather is still relatively light in color with dark spots, and many scuffs and rubs. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is very good to fine with some rubs. Original label is foxed and lightly soiled. Charge card is also soiled and cracked. Accessories are good. Rifle with new stock will not fit in case. (This can be remedied with removal of one spacing block.) This is a perfect rifle for your next safari. The previous owner obviously had this rifle set up for his use with efficient fast handling optical sight and new stock. MGM33
