Christian Hawken was one of the earliest members of this famous gunsmithing family. The rifled octagonal barrel is inscribed "C. Hawken" on the top flat. The flat lock plate has been converted to percussion and is unmarked. Brass furniture is unengraved, other than the four piece patch box with six piercing and engraved boarders and shading. The rifle features double set triggers. The full length figured maple stock of classed Emmitsburg form is carved with relief scroll work on both sides of the wrist, and a bell flower beneath the cheek piece, and ornately carved with C-scrolls behind the cheek piece, along with a daisy and a checkered oval. There is also relief carved scrolls around the barrel tang. A repair has been made during the period of use with a brass band about 3" from the front of the lockplate. CONDITION: Fair. Barrel retains a dark brown patina and has a clear signature. Some corrosion at breech and a break at the tang. The tang screw has been replaced. The lock plate retains a dark gray patina and the hammer has been replaced, mainspring is missing. The brass furniture and silver oval inlay above the cheek piece have been polished bright. Brass shows some scratching from cleaning and scattered marks. Stock show heavy use and carving shows some wear. The wrist escutcheon is absent, and there are some losses to the rifle's comb. One ramrod ferrule is missing and about 13" of the forend is replaced, between two original sections. The wooden ramrod is a contemporary replacement. There are some losses along both sides of the forend and some cracking beneath the lock cavity and side plate. This rifle would be a great candidate for restoration as it has exceptional carving and is signed by a famous member of the Hawken family of gunsmiths.
