Following the Civil War in 1867, the US Government converted numerous Sharps Model 1859, 1863 and 1865 carbines from percussion to centerfire. This work was performed on approximately 31,098 carbines. The barrel was lined with a three groove liner and chambered for the trapdoor caliber .50-70. This allowed the US Government to use up Civil War carbines and reissue them for modern duty in the West. They are extremely historic in that they saw service in the Civil War and the Indian Wars. This particular carbine has been identified to having been issued to William Webster of the 1st Potomac Home Brigade, Maryland Cavalry Company A. This unit consisted of four companies, all were formed between August and November of 1861, based in the Northern Shenandoah Valley. In July 1863 all four Companies fought at the battle of Gettysburg. They were mustered out on June 28th, 1865. Apparently this carbine, which saw use at the battle of Gettysburg, was one of the carbines converted as part of the 1867 Government contract; so its historic use is documented in Gettysburg and further service after that. Complete with reference book listing this gun by serial number, identifying it to the name listed. CONDITION: Barrel retains approximately 95% of the arsenal reapplied blue finish with inspector letter "F" on left side of barrel. Case colored frame has turned soft patina. Walnut stocks are excellent having been refinished at time of conversion; DFC ribbon no longer visible. Fine bore and strong action. A very rare opportunity to own a soldier ID'd Gettysburg weapon.
