This Germanic Jaeger target rifle is stamped "F. WASSMAN/WASHINGTON D.C." on the top flat of the octagonal steel barrel. Features a hooded front sight, a brass block in a dovetail on the barrel, and an adjustable rear peep sight mounted at the back of the barrel tang. Patent breech is engraved. Scalloped back action lockplate is chiseled with scroll work and inscribed "A. Escherich Baltimore", hammer engraved en suite. Chiseled steel furniture includes triggerguard with a relief hunter posed with his rifle, the sideplate with scrolls, and a plain target buttplate. Double set triggers. Partially figured walnut stock with carved high relief cheekpiece on left side and checkered panels on each side of wrist. Small silver heart inlaid behind sideplate escutcheon and a large silver inlay engraved with a patriotic eagle is inlaid above the cheekpiece, but may be a later addition. With associated contemporary wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Good. Barrel retains a brown patina and shows scattered marks from use, some denting, and some scratches to surface. Once had a false muzzle, as slots are present. Lock and all furniture have been cleaned retain a light grey patina, hammer does not lock back in cocked position. Stock very good, as refinished, with a few scattered marks from use.
