Swamped two-stage smoothbore steel barrel, top flat inlayed "CAS HOFER IN ASCHAFF=B" in silver with flats on both sides inlaid with decorated silver panels. Silver spider sight at muzzle, tang engraved "2". Rounded flintlock mechanism with scalloped spring and detached pan. Brass furniture includes full sideplate, buttcap and trigger guard, all with a fleur-de-lis finial. Partially figured full-length stock with ebony nose cap. Relief carved around barrel tang with scrolls and flowers. Relief molding around ramrod channel, lock, and sideplate and relief scrolls behind entry ferrule. Incised lines around trigger guard. Wooden ramrod. Very good, in the black dry condition. Barrel retains a dark grey patina with some pitting around breech. Lock retains an even dark grey patina and is original flintlock configuration. Brass is unpolished and retains a mellow patina, trigger guard tang is missing part of the tang, broken off during period of use. Stock excellent with sharp carving and a few scattered marks from use. The pistol was made by Cas Hoeffer, who worked in Aschaffenburg, which was in the province of Bayern (Bavaria), Germany. He was listed as a gunsmith here in 1780.
