The Model 1878 differs from its predecessors by the lack of percussion type fences, unique rib extension, and rebounding hammers. This gun has 32" barrels of bold, two stripe Damascus. Broad concave game rib is engraved "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y." Barrel flats are stamped with serial number and bottoms of barrels with "3". Lifter action is fitted with bar rebounding locks, fitted with round bodied serpentine hammers with flat noses, and is engraved in a pattern that closely resembles that on a Model 1875 grade 5 illustrated in REMINGTON DOUBLE SHOTGUNS by Charles Semmer, on page 44 with 50% coverage of well cut sprays of scroll with game scenes at fronts of lockplates; a dog chases a rabbit on left, and a pointer points a pair of quail on right. Trigger guard bow is scroll engraved. Later guns of grade 6 were the only ones to have game scenes, so the actual grade of this gun is in question. Lightly marbled European walnut round knob pistol grip ($5.00 option) stock measures 14" over steel buttplate. Well cut borderless point pattern checkering is at grip. Grade 6 guns normally have fancier checkering. Matching splinter forend with inset ebony tip (found on grade 6 guns) attaches to barrels with sliding bolt through oval steel escutcheons. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Barrels retain most of their bold Damascus finish. Action and locks have 20 - 30% original case hardening color. Stocks retain most of their original finish with a considerable amount of marks and dings. Checkering is lightly worn. Bores are good with scattered pitting throughout. Action is tight. Locks are fine. Left hammer screw broken, missing head. A good example of this scarce high grade Remington. MGM 128
