(A) Is a standard model percussion Gallager carbine. This gun has an assembly number of "187" stamped on the lock plate (in addition to the serial number), inside the patchbox, and on the hammer. These saw extensive use during the Civil War with known Union Cavalry regiments being issued these as follows: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th Ohio, 13th Tenn, & 3rd WV. (B) is a Ball & Williams assembled Ballard carbine. This gun features the standard Ballard's Patent marking on the right side of the receiver as well as the Merwin & Bray Agent marking on the left side of the receiver. Approximately 1,000 of these were produced with the entire production going to the State of Kentucky by April of 1864. CONDITION: (A) Retains a pleasing patina with some parts having been reblued. Markings are clear. Stock is refinished. Bore has strong rifling with pitting. Good mechanical function. The trigger is at a bit of an angel and may have had a weld repair to it. Gun (B) has traces of barrel blue with some pitting and dings. The receiver has been lightly cleaned at some point, markings are clear. Wood has some dings and handling marks, in nice untouched condition. The extractor lever is a more modern replacement. Good mechanical function. Bore has strong rifling with areas of roughness. The hammer spur has been welded back on a long time ago.
