Fred Wells of Prescott, AZ, (now deceased), master metalsmith, was well known in the Mauser collecting world. This custom rifle has 26 - 1/2" medium weight sporter barrel engraved "Custom Built For Ted B. Bollier By Fred F. Wells". Caliber is engraved on left side of reinforce. The .350 Well Express appears to be based on the .375 H&H necked to .350. To help absorb recoil generated by this round, barrel has been fitted with an extra recoil lug. Military '98 action with Polish proofs (Radom?) is marked "Gew 98" on side wall. Bolt handle has been lowered and shaped for scope use, and a Buehler low scope safety installed. A commercial trigger has been fitted. Standard bottom metal is retained. Rifle is mounted with Leupold M8 6X scope with duplex reticle in one piece Buehler mount and rings. Nicely figured American walnut stock appears to be the type supplied by Fajin with western American styling having Monte Carlo comb and large swept cheekpiece. Forend tip and grip cap are of rosewood. Point pattern checkering has beaded border. Stock measures 12-1/2" over old open sided white line pad. Weight with scope: 9 lbs. 6 oz. CONDITION: Very fine, as custom finished, retaining most of its blue and stock finish, with a considerable amount of marks and dings. Pad is collapsed and petrified. Bore is excellent.
