Minor spot in-painting throughout; primarily in the sky and a small patch at top of painting above the foremast. Provenance: From the Private Collection of a well-known Fine Art collector from Southern Maine. Note: This painting is very similar to Johnson's "A Close Call" depicting the ship "Skylark" clearing Diego Ramirez off of Cape Hope. The artist is well known for his detailed ship paintings which were often very dramatic with romantic undertones. The artist was originally a sailor, and was on board the ship "Sunbeam" which caught fire and sank off the coast of South America in 1870. He was one of the twelve sailors rescued from the shipwreck; an event that dramatically influenced his works.
