Probably Trabzon, 19th century. Damascus steel blade of familiar kilij form with deep partial fuller, decorated on both sides and spine with gold overlaid inscriptions and decoration. Repousse decorated silver hilt and guard featuring floral motifs and ornamented with pieces of polished turquoise and fluted and polished coral on the right side. Silver repousse scabbard extensively decorated en suite with florals and also inset with coral and turquoise on the front. Pierced and chiseled silver drag and silver mounts with hanger rings. For two similar examples, see page 209, figures 507 and 508 of "Islamic and Oriental Arms and Armour" by Robert Hales. CONDITION: Blade retains a light grey surface overall with fuller retaining a darker patina, some scattered areas of spotting, light freckling, and darker areas, also some light wear to gold decoration. Hilt retains a dark unpolished patina and guard is slightly loose. Scabbard also retains a dark unpolished patina with relief designs slightly brighter. This is a very high quality and decorative Ottoman kilij for the discriminating Eastern collector.
