(1913) 30" Chopper lump barrels are engraved "Stephen Grant & Sons. 67A, St. James's Street, London." on concave game rib. Rear portion is engraved "Patent" "Ejector" and inlaid with gold "2", which is also in gold on top lever and forend tip. Tops of barrels are engraved "Sir Joseph Whitworth's" "Fluid Pressed Steel". Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2-1/2" chambers. Serial numbers are on bottoms of barrels. Case hardened sidelock action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), bushed strikers, and double triggers. Action is filed in classic grant style with its graceful ovate fences. Action is engraved with 90% coverage exceptionally well cut varying sized shaded scroll. "Stephen Grant & Sons" is at the front of each lockplate. Top lever and trigger guard are blued with matching scroll on lever and usual open scroll on trigger guard. Serial number is on tang. Nicely marbled and lightly figured dark European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 13 - 15/16" over checkered wood butt with engraved steel heel and toe plates. Small drop points are behind locks. Semi flat top point pattern checkering with mullered borders is at grip, and a vacant silver oval is on swept toe line. Matching splinter Southgate ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in an old oak and leather case with brass corners, lined in green cloth. Reproduction Grant trade label as well as instruction label are in lid. Case contains two piece ebony and brass cleaning rod with short handle, relatively new square oil bottle and Grant marked snap caps, with other cleaning accessories and an empty tin of Rangoon oil. CONDITION: Excellent, as partially refinished. Barrels retain essentially all of a fine London quality re-black. Action retains most of its original color, silvered on fences and beads, and around bottom from normal hand wear. Lockplates retain nearly all of their color. Top lever is silvered on thumbpiece. Trigger guard is considerably flaked and silvered with only traces of blue remaining on bow. Buttstock retains most of its original finish with a number of marks and scratches, oil rubbed in as maintenance. Checkering lightly worn. Forend has had 2" x 1/2" repair on right side toward tip, which is almost invisible from outside, but noticeable when looking at inside barrel channel. Bores are good to fine, shiny, with numerous fairly heavy pits toward muzzle ends (wall thickness still good - over .030, and these could be removed). Action is tight. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case leather is considerably darkened and crazed, with scuffs and rubs. Straps and handle renewed, and are fine. Interior cloth with light insect damage in lid is partially renewed in base. Accessories are good to excellent. The understated elegance of guns by Stephen Grant is evident in this great handling specimen which has excellent dimensions and measurements. MGM70
