(Finished in 1898, reference: THE GREENER STORY page 199) This medium grade gun was most likely made for export, as these robust Damascus barrels have only black powder proofs. Nitro proof instituted in 1896, was not mandatory until 1904. Barrels measure 28" and 29 - 5/8" long, and are both fitted with raised beautifully matted concave game ribs, engraved with a game bird at breech ends. Unmatted portion of ribs are engraved with Greener's London and Birmingham addresses, along with London Gun Trial dates, and the numerals "1" and "2". Case hardened patented boxlock action features side safety, crossbolt third fastener, and double triggers. Action is engraved with 60% coverage well cut small scroll within geometric and scroll borders. "W. W. GREENER" is in scrolled riband on each side of action. Blued top lever and trigger guard have matching scroll. Serial number and grade are on trigger guard tang. Lightly marbled and figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 13 - 3/4" over checkered horn buttplate. Well cut borderless point pattern checkering wraps completely around grip. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching splinter forend with inlet horn tip as Deeley release. Serial number and grade are engraved on iron. Gun and both sets of barrels are housed in an old brown canvas case with tan leather trim lined in burgundy cloth. A gold embossed black leather Greener label is in lid. Case contains some cleaning equipment including a 3 piece brass and ebony cleaning rod. CONDITION: Excellent, close to new, as expertly refinished, most likely in London, and it appears that this gun was in exceptionally fine condition before being refurbished, which is not unusual with English guns. Barrels retain over 98% very fine old brown refinish with good definition to Damascus pattern, engraving remains sharp and clear. The only indication that any work was done is that there are some marks on flats which are under new brown finish. Action retains 95% case hardening color subsequently silvered on fences. Top lever and trigger guard are correctly re-charcoal blued with subsequent flaking on top lever. Stocks retain nearly all hand rubbed oil finish with some light marks. Checkering shows almost no wear. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Case is very fine with renewed tan trim and strap retainers. Older straps are good as is newer handle. A lovely old Greener that looks to be "as new". MGM54
