Daniel Crum (1841-1926) was a gunsmith who lived in six locations in or near Newport, Perry County, Pennsylvania. This heavy bench rifle features a a heavy rifled octagonal steel barrel with front sights mounted on top, top flat stamped "D. CRUM". The percussion lock plate is decorated at the tail with stamp engraved designs. The rifle features double set triggers and a brass target trigger guard with two spurs. The brass furniture includes an engraved tow plate and an engraved two piece patch box. There is also a silver inlay with two Liberty caps engraved above the cheek piece. The full length figured maple stock is of familiar Perry County form. Complete with original wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Good. Barrel retains a dark heavy brown patina with some heavy corrosion around bolster. The lock retains a heavy brown patina and shows heavy use and pitting. The hammer screw is partially broken. Brass retains a mellow patina and the patch box lid is slightly bent. Stock shows heavy wear and has a piece of wood missing in front of the lock as well as between the lock and barrel tang.
