(A) is a 5th Model Burnside carbine. Matching numbers. Standard markings. Visible cartouche on the left side of the stock. Forend has been grooved, presumably during the period, for a ramrod which is not present. Large guide screw on the right side of the receiver. (B) is a standard production Smith carbine. Matching numbers. Barrel band and screw appear to be later made replacements. No visible inspectors marks in wood. CONDITION: (A) Retains a pleasing patina overall with some light pitting and old surface rust. Markings are clear. Replacement hammer screw. Good mechanical function. Wood has numerous dings and handling marks, showing wear. Bore is dirty with strong rifling. (B) Retains a pleasing patina, with some light surface rust. Metal looks to have been painted black at some point. Wood is solid with some dings and handling marks. Hammer screw is a brass replacement. Good mechanical function. Markings clear. Bore is fine with sharp rifling.
