Superimposed shotgun over rifle barrels are 26" long, top barrel with full length broad matted rib is fitted with flip-over rifle/ shotgun rear sight. Unmatted portion of rib is gold inlaid "Ed Kettner, Coln/Rh". Barrels are stamped with German imperial proofs with no nitro mark (pre 1896). Rear portion of top barrel is gold inlaid with arabesque scroll as counterpoint to floral and flying bird highlights. Nicely sculpted round bodied OU top lever action is fitted with peninsula back spring rebounding locks with round bodied serpentine hammers. Action and lockplates are engraved with near full coverage large open shaded scrolling acanthus in typical German style. This scroll surrounds nicely detailed game scenes. A roebuck with doe and fawn are on left side of action. A wolf is crouched over a captured doe on left lockplate. Right lock portrays a pair of battling wild boar; right side of action has scene of stag roaring as it stands over vanquished foe. A calling auerhahn perched on a branch decorates trigger guard bow. Nicely fiddle figured and lightly marbled European walnut round knob pistol grip buttstock measures 13 - 1/8" over ribbed horn buttplate. Stock features right hand shadow line cheekpiece, and cartridge trap on toe line, with space for one shot shell and two rifle cartridges. Cover is engraved with interesting scene of stag with eagle perched on its head. It appears that the toe chipped at one time, and a nicely fitted steel replacement has been installed. The most striking feature of this stock is the fine carving on left side behind cheekpiece depicting a wolf (?) and dog in combat. A castle is in the background. In place of checkering grip is also relief carved in open scrolling acanthus with large floral highlights. Matching checkered slim one piece forend has Deeley release. Gun is fitted with old carrying sling. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain approx 30% finish, considerably patinated. Action and locks have approximately 30% original case hardening color, mostly darkened to grayish brown. Stocks retain most of their original finish under some added oil. Carving is slightly softened from hand wear. Bores are very fine with a few scattered light pits in both shotgun and rifle. Action is tight. Right lock is good, left lock slip-hammered. A high quality lightweight combination. MGM121
