This good looking target rifle left the factory in 1896 as caliber 38-55 with 30" half octagon number 2 barrel. It also had set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Swiss buttplate, as well as mid range and windgauge sights with "no rear seat". It was returned and repaired August 5, 1912 and it is possible that present 30" number 4 full octagon barrel was installed at that time. This barrel in 32-40 is uncut for rear sight and Winchester information is on top left flat. Barrel is fitted with spirit level adjustable front sight. Barrel and action have Winchester proof. Action is boldly case hardened in color and is fitted with close set double set triggers. A mid range tang sight is fitted. Fine XXX feather crotch walnut Winchester capped checkered pistol grip buttstock measures 13-3/8" over nickel plated Swiss buttplate. Matching forend with inset ebony tip screws to barrel. There is no serial number in barrel channel. CONDITION: Excellent. Newer barrel retains over 90% blue with sharp edge wear. Action retains 80 -90% case hardening color, silvered on high edges and flats. Winchester proof on action does not match that on barrel (appears to be engraved). Operating lever retains about 40% of its color. Stocks retain over 95% original french polish finish. Forend with considerable wear, mostly at balance point. Plating on buttplate shows brass on sharp edges. Bore is excellent. Mechanically fine. Trigger sets. MGM 173
