Possibly retailed by Tiffany & Co., this fine silver hilt has a curved steel blade with wide partial fuller on each side and 18" blued, engraved and gilt decorated panels on each side. The right side features floral motifs, a patriotic eagle holding an "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner in its beak, and a liberty pole. The ricasso is decorated with acanthus leaves and a "Warranted" banner. The left side features floral scrolls, an Indian headdress with bow and arrow, cannons flags and drums. Solid silver hilt in the French style with chased acanthus leaf languets and eagles head pommel. French grip of ivory with checkered panels on each side. Complete with black leather scabbard with solid silver mounts in the French style and a chased frog stud with a star. This is a much larger than usual example of a silver mounted officer's saber. CONDITION: Very good. Blade retains a polished surface with some dark freckling and one nick from another sword blade on the edge. Retains approximately 80% of blued and gilt finishes with some scabbard wear to high edges. Hilt is excellent and has been polished, shows some wear and minor marks from use. Grip has been cleaned and now retains a white color with several scattered hairline cracks from age. Scabbard and mounts are very good with some minor denting. An extremely attractive, usable example.
