Rare and desirable original Elgin cutlass pistol by Morrill Mossman and Blair with large etched Bowie type blade. One of the most interesting and desirable of all American single shot percussion pistols are those made by Morrill Mossman and Blair, known as Elgin Bowie knife pistols. This in an original Elgin cutlass pistol with Bowie blade finely etched with American eagle, stars, and flowers, and makers name "Elgin Mossman & Blair Mass." Boxlock percussion action and rifled barrel. The grip of bag form, and the Bowie blade is a full 8-3/4" long and 1-1/2" wide. The Bowie blade is in good condition with some sharping and moderate pitting, however, the American eagle is mostly visible, as is some of the makers' names on left side. Barrel has fine old brown patina and minor pitting. All parts appear to be original. Action is good and varnished walnut bag grip is original with good patina and possibly some old added varnish. Altogether a great specimen of this valuable pistol which appears to be entirely original.
