Straight tapered spadroon blade with large single fuller on each side. The upper 10-1/2" of each side feature engraved and gilded decoration. The right side shows floral scrolls and arms motifs with a liberty cap. The other side features a patriotic Federal Eagle and a banner reading "I. Wells & Co / New York". Ricasso on the right side partially beneath the hilt is stamped "G". Solid silver hilt with five ball counterguard and knucklebow. Grip of reeded ebony with fine molded and faceted silver pillow pommel. Hilt has no visible maker's marks. Complete with 20" of its original brown leather scabbard. CONDITION: Good. Blade shows some wear and retains a spotted grey patina; much of gilt wash still remains, especially on left side of blade. There are a few minor nicks to the edge and point is dulled slightly. The hilt retains an unpolished patina and the grip is very good with a few marks from use. Scabbard is brittle and retains a crazed surface. A very nice, early American silver hilt.
