This massive crossbow with wooden stock and heavy steel mounts, about 15 pounds and 43" in length not including the windless. Unusually fine quality throughout and much earlier than most of these bows. The steel trigger guard is of good quality with reeding and fluting. The robust steel bow retains what appears to be its original twisted linen cord. The heavy straps holding the bow are decorated. The nut is held in with two pierced steel plaques. The channel is of white stag horn. The original windlass is complete with turned wood handles. Steel stirrup for drawing. Mechanism appears to need adjustment. CONDITION: Very good. A 4" sliver is missing from the left side of the wood stock. Steel patinated with only very minor corrosion and much old dried oil. Windlass and wheel are good with minor pitting. Handles are chipped. Nut is replaced with wood, should be bone. One bone inlay behind nut appears to be replaced. Horn on channel appears to be original, as does the bowstring. A very impressive and much earlier than is unusual to find example of this important type of crossbow.
