Circa 1814. In the classic Empire style, this lovely saber has a 32" blue and gilt blade with stirrup hilt, checkered, fluted ebony grip and relief cast and chased bronze goddess langettes. The gilt brass pommel is delicately engraved with wriggle work and D guard with a relief flower. An elaborately cast and chased gilded brass scabbard with relief battle scene which shows men on horseback firing pistols and wings with lightning bolts. Another scene shows a soldier in a bi-horn hat firing an artillery piece. CONDITION: Blade is in excellent condition with most of the original fire blue and gilding remaining. Original polish remaining on the front 2/3 of the scabbard. Hilt with some original gilding remaining. Scabbard with traces of original gilding, with some door dents, pinches and other mars. Altogether a very showy and attractive French saber.
