The introduction of the Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver in 1935 was heralded as one of the greatest innovations in handguns in a century. At the time, the .44 caliber Colt Dragoon was still considered the most powerful handgun in the world until surpassed by this new revolver. It was a total custom offering that allowed customers to virtually handpick any option they wanted, which included barrel lengths, hammers, sights, finish, etc. The registration number for each order was stamped inside the yoke, this number is "R1689". Approximately 5,224 were manufactured between 1935 and 1939. This revolver featured the Patridge front sight, fully checkered rib and frame, adjustable rear sight, fully checkered hammer with oil retaining grooves on side and patent date, six shot and blued finish. Comes with pinned barrel and recessed chambers. This fine revolver was factory refinished January of 1958 and is so stamped inside grip frame, at this time the beautiful Smith & Wesson silver medallion custom grips were installed. It is housed in an original Type II light blue picture box with an original screwdriver of the style used from 1930 to 1941. CONDITION: With exception to a light cylinder ring, the gun appears unfired since factory refinish with brilliant case colors on trigger and hammer. Grips are near mint. Bore and action are near mint. The Type II box has high edge wear but is in excellent, all original condition. The certificate is no longer present. All in all, a near mint factory refinished Smith & Wesson pre-war Registered Magnum.
