This is an unusual rifle in that the serial number is 18495, which can be found stamped on buttplate, buttstock, forend and frame. Bottom of barrel is stamped "M" for Marlin. It has a Type II breech block as seen on page 28 in the book "A Collector's Guide to the Savage 99 Rifle" which is the earliest type of 1899 bolt and can be seen on figure 3-4, second from top. The round barrel features the knife blade front sight, flat muzzle, fire blue rear sight. The barrel address is the early Savage Model 1899 used until approximately 1904 with the July 25th, 1893 barrel date seen on page 124, bottom photo. Serial number puts production at 1901 when 6,100 were produced. It is stated Savage used leftover 1895 components on the earliest rifles. This early model features the round barrel with the high polish blue frame, perch belly walnut stock, rifle buttstock, second style Schnabel forend tip (page 28, lower photo). Comes with slings. Fire blue rear sight is the early style, thin with no adjusting screws, seen on page 28, figure 3-4, second from top. CONDITION: Gun retains approximately 90% blue with some scattered toning. Frame retains approximately 40-50% of the factory bright blue. Nice traces of case colors on lever. There is a minute sliver of wood missing from left tang. Walnut stocks are excellent and proud to metal. Strong bore with deep cut rifling. Correct working action. A fine condition, really early third year production Model 1899 rifle. Never found in this condition this early.
