The Bittner is one of the more successful and interesting German attempts to produce an automatic pistol. This one is serial number 2520 and dated 1897 and is marked "Patent Bittner" with CB logo over W in a circle on right side of frame. German double headed eagle proof. This fine Bittner has most of the original color casehardening remaining on right side with some surface corrosion. Left side of frame retains some vibrant case color in protected areas, but mostly faded in high points. Barrel retains much of what appears to be original brown finish with scattered scratched and dents. Bolt is in the white as is correct for this repeater pistol. Back strap retains only traces of casehardening around lanyard. Trigger and mechanism retains traces of finish, engraved screws are good. Checkered walnut forend insert with two minor chips on left side where insert meets barrel. Varnished checkered walnut grips are good with some original varnish remaining. Only minor wear to checkering and no major chips or dents. Lanyard ring is possibly original, retaining most patinated nickle finish. Rear sight retains good trace of original niter blue. Front sight retains faint traces of original niter blue. Engine turning of top barrel flat is good. Action is crisp, bore has strong rifling and will clean up well. A good specimen of this most attractive and desirable early repeating pistol.
