This very scarce rifle was imported right after WWI and it has been speculated that it was made by J. P. Sauer for Newton. Jon Speed in THE MAUSER ARCHIVE devotes many pages to the history of Newton Arms, and with a description and considerable number of photographs of a similar rifle (Number 6057 on right side of action. 29604 on bottom of barrel) to this example which has 24 - 1/2" round barrel with two folding leaf rear sight and integral front ramp. Top of barrel is engraved "Made in Germany For" "Chas. Newton Rifle Corporation" "Buffalo, N. Y. " "U. S. A." Rear portion of barrel is engraved ".256 Newton" "Patent Pending" "Rustless Steel" and is stamped with German nitro proofs. Large ring 98 action is unmarked except for serial number on right side of receiver ring, and has correct Mauser type "M" butter knife bolt handle. Bolt body, follower and right bolt runway are engine turned. Extractor is damascened. Standard bottom metal with nicely slimmed trigger guard is fitted with unique to this model opposed double set triggers. Nicely fiddle figured European walnut horn capped pistol grip stock measures 13 - 1/2" over steel buttplate, stamped with number "29607". This number also appears on bottom of barrel, seen when removed from stock. "607" is on bottom of action and left side of trigger guard. "07" is on bottom of bolt handle and on bolt stop. Stock also features schnabeled forend tip and nicely cut point pattern checkering. Weight: 7 lbs 10 oz. CONDITION: Excellent. Metal parts retain over 95% original blue with some light marks, with some silvering near muzzle and sharp edge wear. Stock retains nearly all of its original hand rubbed oil finish with some light marks and dings, most notably a fairly deep but small knock on right side of comb. Horn grip cap has some insect damage. This rifle would be near pristine except that it has been drilled and tapped for scope mounts and a portion of the top of the bridge slightly lowered. (Buehler scope bases are included.) Bore is excellent, bright, sharp and shiny. Action is smooth. Triggers work. An attractive example of this interesting bit of American rifle history. Examples are found in very few collections. MGM 85
