The ten gauge magnum was developed in the early '30's for the then new ten gauge 3 - 1/2" shell shooting 2 ounces of shot. To withstand the battering of this load, the barrel lump was extended through the heavy frame for extra bearing surface. A total of 1011 were produced in all grades and gauges (approximately 87 12-ga 3" guns were made). 56 were made in grade 4. This gun dates toward the end of production (ca 1942) and does not have the pin type cocking indicators found on earlier NIDs. The 30"barrels are engraved "ITHACA GUN CO, ITHACA, N.Y. U.S.A." on milled out portion of matted game rib, set with two ivory beads. Engine turned barrel flats are stamped with serial number, grade, and choke numbers "4" and "4" (full and full), as well as "3 1/2" CHAMBERS". Lump is stamped "PROOF TESTED". Robust case hardened action with automatic safety and gold plated double triggers is engraved in typical grade "4" style with 70% coverage shaded acanthus scroll within line and geometric borders surrounding vignettes of game on sides; duck takes wing from marsh on left, and a walking pheasant on right. "Ithaca Gun Co" is on left side and "Ithaca N. Y."' is on right. Bottom and trigger plate have more acanthus. Blued trigger guard with acanthus on bow has serial number on tang. Nicely crotch figured American walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/4" over red open side Hawkins pad. Fancy pattern checkering with ribbons and fleur-di-lis intrusions is at grip. A vacant gold oval is on toe line. Matching beavertail forend has inset ebony triangle at tip, reinforcing bolt, and has J-spring and Deeley type release. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels retain 90 - 95% blue, most loss due to sharp edge wear along ribs and at muzzles, and a patch where sling loop was removed on bottom rib. This area is brown in color. Action retains 95%+ case hardening color, silvered at bit on fences, thumbpiece, and on sharp edges, with a very few very light marks and scratches, mostly on bottom. Stocks retain nearly all of their original varnish finish with scattered light marks. Checkering remains light in color, little worn. A hole has been plugged on toe line with removal of sling swivel. Pad appears to be original. Gold of triggers is silvered on front. Forend latch retains over 90% of its original blue, trigger guard almost all of its blue. Bores are excellent. Mechanically excellent. These heavy guns were generally used in wet and sometimes salty environments. Nearly all saw fairly heavy use. This superb condition high grade example, possibly the best ever seen by this cataloger, is almost unprecedented. MGM 211
