This is one of the finest examples extant and still retains its original collection tag from the C. Meade Patterson Collection. Only about 4,024 made between 1855 and 1857 for dragoon and cavalry use. Features a round rifled steel barrel with faceted breech stamped on left side with "V/P" over an eagle head proof. Features a swivel type ramrod mounted below barrel and fixed front sight with rear graduated leaf sight. Flat percussion lockplate with Maynard priming device, front tang stamped "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" and dated "1855" at tail, priming door stamped with eagle. Standard Model 1855 brass furniture, buttcap stamped "4", as well as buttstock fitting. Matching stock/pistol combinations are rarely seen. Walnut stock and buttstock, brass buttplate stamped "US" on tang. Left side of stock, opposite the lock, stamped with clear "JS" cartouche for inspector James Stillman. The lanyard ring on the buttcap still retains a brass "C.M.P" collection tag (C. Meade Patterson), as well as another round brass collection tag. CONDITION: Fine to excellent. Excellent markings throughout and sharp edges. Nearly pristine bore. All surfaces are bright with a few light storage marks. Sound wood showing a few scattered storage marks.
