Factory engraved Winchester 1866 rifle manufactured in 1870. 24 inch octagon barrel with ladder adjustable rear sight and sporting blade front sight. Two piece American walnut stocks with sling swivels. engraved in the Ulrich style with large scroll and vines with floral centers. Clam shell pattern border at receiver front and rear. Rope border around panels. Top of receiver bridge and bottom of elevator engraved in matching scroll. Upper and lower tangs engraved in same style with small chase line bordering edges. Fore end cap is engraved in matching scroll with same clam shell border. Lower tang is marked with "S" and "XX" . A quantity of silver plate is quite visible on tangs under wood line. Butt plate is numbered to another rifle but is engraved in a very similar fashion and matches well. A indiscernible 4 digit serial number was observed in stock mortise but believed not to be matching. CONDITION. Good overall as partially refinished. Barrel and magazine have had a contemporary finish applied that has aged well and looks attractive. Two piece American walnut stocks are solid and have a very nice oil finish and look attractive and consistent. The brass frame , butt plate and forend cap have been cleaned at an earlier time but are starting to patina back to a mustard color. The bore is dark with visible rifling. action is properly functioning and crisp. TDW
